Mixing up the Music.

It's definitely time to shake up the workout routine --- I have a feeling I am going to become much better acquainted with Butt-Crack O'Dawn. I especially like BCOD this time of year; in the winter, she becomes a real witch. And it's also time to shake up my workout music.

I haven't really done much to the ol' MP3 player in ages. I've added a few new songs here and there, but it's time to go through the songs I have on there and prune out what isn't working, what I'm so tired of that I automatically hit forward, and what is getting me moving these days.

So in order by title:
  • (Every Time I Turn Around) Back in Love Again - LTD: Gone. It's been on there forever, and I like the song, but I am beyond tired of it.
  • (Get Up I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine - James Brown: Gone. Ditto.
  • A Man I'll Never Be - Boston: Gone. Love the song, and ever since Brad Delp's untimely death, it's taken on a greater poignancy for me. But workout-friendly (WF), it is not.
  • Ah! Leah! - Donnie Iris: Undecided. I like the song, and it's quasi-good for a workout. But it's one I skip over more often than not. It will probably go, but I'm on the fence.
  • Ain't Wasting Time No More - Allman Brothers Band. Stay. Love the song, love the message, and it's good for a warm-up or cool-down.
  • Alive & Kicking - Simple Minds. Undecided. It actually works pretty good, but another one where it's been on there a while and so....
  • All Fired Up - Pat Benatar. Stay. I had it on a long time ago, took it off, and realized I needed it back. Good message song, great beat for a workout, and I like it lots.
  • Are You Experienced - Jimi Hendrix. Gone. Love the song but again, not terribly WF.
  • Are You Ready - Pacific Gas & Electric. Stay. Love it, and the beat is WF. A good underrated song altogether, and I'm hooked on it lately.
  • Baker Street - Gerry Rafferty. Gone. Not really WF and I skip it 90% of the time because I'm tired of it.
  • Bitch - Rolling Stones. Gone. Beat is WF, but one that has been on so long I'm tired of it.
  • Boogie Wonderland - Earth Wind & Fire. Gone. I love EWF more than you'd believe, but this is another "been on so long I'm tired of it." Sorry, fellas......
  • Boogie Woogie Choo Choo Train - The Tractors. Gone. I like the song, and it's quasi WF, but again: tired of it.
  • Born to Run - Bruce Springsteen. Stay. You'll notice a recurring and semi-scary theme in a lot of these "stay" songs. This one stays.
  • Brand New Lover - Dead or Alive. Undecided. Great WF beat, I love the sassiness of the song, and I love reminders of the 80s. This one will most likely stay, but just in case.....
  • Cigarettes & Alcohol - Rod Stewart. Gone. I had taken this off, and put it back on later. Now I wonder why. I like the song, but it just doesn't move me like I thought it might.
  • Cool the Engines - Boston. Stay. Great song, WF beat, and I have long enjoyed it as a cool-down song. The length and beat is perfect for that! And I love Boston something fierce. Next!
  • Cradle of Love - Billy Idol. Gone. Don't get me wrong: I love this song, it's WF, and it's got that swagger I adore. But I am skipping it more often than not, so it's time. But it will go in the "bring back later" pile.
  • Dancing Days - Led Zeppelin. Gone. It's okay, but not really all that for a workout. Meh. Yeah, that's it: meh.
  • Dancing in the Moonlight - King Harvest. Undecided. I love this song. It's not exactly WF. But it's one of those songs from my childhood that makes me happy, and I'm not sure if that's good enough reason to keep it around.
  • Dazz - Brick. Gone. I like the song, but I'm tired of it.
  • Deeper & Deeper - The Fixx. Gone. That one is tough to part with, but it's time. I just need a change, and the space on the MP3 player.
  • Dixie Chicken - Little Feat. Gone. Another tough one to let go, but honestly, not very WF except for a warm-up or cool-down, and I have enough of those already.
  • War - Edwin Starr (in this position only due to a tagging error). Gone. I love this song for so many reasons. God knows, the content is as relevant in 2009 as it was in 1970 (good Lord! 39 years?) And it's a very WF song. But I tend to skip it about half the time, so .......
  • Eruption/You Really Got Me - Van Halen. Gone. I have skipped this about 90% of the time. What I need is a playlist called "Interstate Driving Songs" -- now this is a prime candidate for that!
  • Every Little Thing - Carlene Carter. Undecided. I like the song, but again, I skip it more often than not. But it's just WF enough that I might keep it. Can't decide just yet.
  • Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic - The Police. Gone. It pains me to even type that. I love this song in 2009 as much as I did in 1981, and to me, it sounds just as good as it did back then. But another one that I skip because I've had it on for so long that I don't think I can listen one more time and really enjoy it. When a song you love becomes background music, that's a sign you need to put it away for a while.
  • Everybody Dance - Ta Mara & the Seen. Gone. I love the song, and a nice little reminder of my high school days. The beat is WF, but it's just not..... mooooooooooving me. Hard to explain.
  • Far Cry - Rush. Gone. Love the song, good beat, and all. Again, just not moving me like it should in a workout. Great song, though.
  • Move Over - Janis Joplin (another tagging error puts it here). Undecided. Love the song, but it isn't reaching me like I thought it might. So probably gone, but need to really think about it.
  • Gemini Dream - Moody Blues. Gone. Another song I love and a little bit of personal memory for me (another story for the main blog). But it's time to go. However, I might replace it with one of its album-mates, "The Voice." (Another FINE song!)
  • Go Faster - Black Crowes. Undecided. Love it, it's WF, and it can be motivating if I'm in the right frame of mind. But I can take or leave it right now. It may stay.... I don't know.
  • Hair of the Dog - Nazareth. Gone. All I can see is the Geico gecko driving a little toy car into his "Employee of the Month" parking space. Sorry, that killed it for me.
  • Hearts on Fire - Randy Meisner. Undecided. I like it an awful lot, but it's at a skip rate of about 50%. When I do listen to it, it reminds me why I have it on here in the first place. But not sure if that's reason enough to keep it.
  • Home and Dry - Gerry Rafferty. Gone. I love the song, but no need for it here. Not a WF beat, and it's just not doing it for me.
  • Humans Being - Van Halen. Stay. A new addition, and GREAT for a workout. You know, I have some thoughts on "Van Halen" (with DLR) vs. "Van Hagar" but again, that's for the main blog. It stays.
  • I Feel Free - Cream. Undecided. Love the song, and another one that gets skipped probably more than it should. But when I do listen, I love it. Not exactly a pumping workout beat, but......
  • I Want to Break Free - Queen. Gone. I am a big fan of Queen and miss Freddie Mercury dearly, but this isn't doing it for me as far as workouts. So......
  • I Want You Back - Jackson 5. Stay. When I started this particular post, Michael Jackson was still among the living; so this kind of has a little special sparkle now..... Anyway, for the youngsters out there (born after 1983), at one time, Michael Jackson wasn't a freakshow (see any of the specials they'll run from now till Christmas). He was nothing less than an amazing talented little ball of fire. This is from that time. I may also add "ABC" (another great J5 song) and "The Love You Save" ..... all very WF. **Plus, I love the Special K commercial from a couple of years ago where the teen daughter took her mom's old jeans and this song was used as the mom worked her way back to the smaller size, and then grabbed the jeans from her daughter and said, "Not so fast....." That's motivating! RIP, Michael. I hate that the last 20 years were more well known for the weirdness instead of your HUGE talent.
  • I've Got A Rock & Roll Heart - Eric Clapton. Gone. Dagger to my heart. I love this song, but it's just not cutting it for workouts. Big le sigh.
  • Invisible - Alison Moyet. Gone. Good song, but just not cutting it for the workouts.
  • It's In the Way That You Use It - Eric Clapton. Gone. Good song, good beat, but again, just not doing it for me. Sorry.
  • Jailbreak - Thin Lizzy. Gone. Love the song, but it's been on too long. I need to take it off for a while then put it on again at a later time.
  • James Dean - The Eagles. Undecided. Love the song, but another skip rate of > 50%. When I do listen, I love it, but it's kind of take-or-leave right now.
  • Jealousy - Black Crowes. Stay. Even though I've had this on forever, I think it will stay. Something about the swagger makes me keep it around, even though the beat is just a wee bit slower than I would normally like in a workout song.
  • Jive Talkin' - Bee Gees. Gone. I thought this would be a good addition, but it's just not moving me like I imagined it would.
  • Journey to the Center of the Mind - Amboy Dukes. Stay. Love the song, can't explain why it's working for me right now, but I'm not messing with it.
  • Keep Yourself Alive - Queen. Stay. Good workout beat. I tend to skip on occasion, but not that often, and I'm not going to take it out of the rotation just yet.
  • Leave It - Yes. Stay. I have loved this song since 1984, and I see no reason to remove it. The beat is a bit slower than I would normally like, but you know..... I'll call it interval training. Yeah! That's it!
  • Let Me Love You Tonight - Pure Prairie League. Gone. Love the song, and it was the first time I ever heard Vince Gill (before he hit it really big on his own). Great if I'm shag-dancing -- and for non-South Carolinians, the shag is our official state dance, but it's not what you think. But for a workout, nah..... not cutting it.
  • Life Is A Rock (But the Radio Rolled Me) - Reunion. Stay. Love it. Nuff said.
  • Lights Out - Peter Wolf. Gone. Like it but it's got a high skip rate. So....
  • Love Will Find A Way - Pablo Cruise. Undecided. I love this song, and it has an okay WF beat..... but I tend to skip it. Hmm. What to do....
  • Lovefool - The Cardigans. Gone. Most likely. I had it on here quite a while back, took it off, put it back on ..... and it's just Meh for me.
  • Midnight at the Oasis - Maria Muldaur. Gone. I'm not even sure why I have it on here. It's okay for a cooldown, but really.....
  • Misty Mountain Hop - Led Zeppelin. Stay. WF if I'm doing stationary bike, a little less so for walking, a little good for a jog section..... So it stays.
  • Need You Tonight - INXS. Stay. Michael Hutchence will always have a place on my MP3 player. Rowr. That man was sex on a mic. (Okay, who turned off the A/C?)
  • Never Been Any Reason - Head East. Undecided. I've had it on here a while, and I don't want familiarity to breed contempt. But.... I love it. AARGH.
  • New York Groove - Ace Frehley. Undecided. It's a good beat for walking, less so for biking. Gotta ponder these last two.....
  • No More Mr. Nice Guy - Alice Cooper. Gone. I love the song, don't get me wrong, and the beat is pretty WF. But another where it's time to come off the rotation.
  • Oh Yeah - Yello. Undecided. Okay, DEFINITELY a WF-beat. But after about a minute of it (usually the 3rd chicka-chick-AH!), I'm ready to move on.
  • On and On - Stephen Bishop. Gone. Much like "Midnight at the Oasis," I don't know why I have this one on here. I like the song, but it gets skipped in my workouts, so.....
  • Ooh Child - The Five Stairsteps. Stay. I know -- definitely not a WF beat. But the message. Oh my...... I have to have it there for just that reason. A great pick-up for when I need to remind myself that it's all worth it. And for that alone, it stays.
  • Over the Hills and Far Away - Led Zeppelin. Gone. Love the song, don't get me wrong. But it's not good for a workout, with all the tempo changes. I need something with a little more consistent beat. But again, a great song.
  • Party - Boston. Stay. Good beat, but I do need to make my own edit to take out that slow intro and start with the electric guitar.
  • Peace Frog - The Doors (without "Blue Sunday"). Stay. The beat, that's why.
  • Play Something Sweet (Brickyard Blues) - Three Dog Night. Stay. A recent addition, and while the beat's a little slower it's still uptempo enough for me to keep going at a moderate pace. And it makes me smile too.
  • Pop Life (Fresh Dance Mix) - Prince. Gone. Love the 1986 single of this, but I'm trying to remember how I got this mix .... because I am less than crazy about it. The 1986 "radio edit" (ha) might go back on here, but this one is outta here.
  • Pump Up The Volume - M/A/R/R/S. Undecided. This one is actually a 12" remix (the Colourbox remix). Great, but goes a little long for my liking. If I find the 1987 single as it was played on radio, that would go back here -- awesome consistent beat, perfect for working out!
  • Radioactive - The Firm. Gone. Love it, but it's not doing anything for me. :(
  • Ray of Light - Madonna. Stay. If ever there were a beat that was WF, it's this! And it's a good song, too.
  • Real Wild Child - Iggy Pop. Stay. Of course.... good beat, love the song, so why not?
  • Redneck Friend - Jackson Browne. Stay. I love this song too much to let it go.....
  • Remedy - Black Crowes. Gone. I like the song, but getting tired of it.
  • Renegade - Styx. Gone. Another one that I like but need to take out of rotation. I have a feeling that's the reason for so many of my "gone" list.
  • Rock & Roll - Led Zeppelin. Undecided. Like the song, and I'm finally able to hear it without thinking of Cadillacs...... but I'm kind of "meh" on it for workouts. Driving down the interstate is another story (heh heh heh).
  • Rock & Roll Is King - ELO. Stay. Good beat, short but not too short. What rock and roll really used to be ....3 minutes of joy.
  • Rock Star - Nickelback. Gone. Was on, then off, and I put it back on.... no idea why. I mean, I like it, but WF it is not.
  • Rock the Casbah - The Clash. Gone. Needs rotating out.
  • Rock You Like A Hurricane - The Scorpions. Gone. Ditto.
  • Rocky Mountain Way - Joe Walsh. Gone. Yet another needs to be out.
  • Romeo's Tune - Steve Forbert. Undecided. I love this song, I'm not tired of it, but it is good for warm-up/cool-down and that's about it.
  • Runner - Manfred Mann's Earth Band. Stay. A slow start, but it picks up pace. Ha, much like a runner, right? This song actually makes me consider running.
  • Running on Empty - Jackson Browne. Stay. One, it's the story of my life since .... oh, somewhere around 1984? I swear, there are days I do not know where I find it to keep moving. But more importantly, this is the song that always crops up in my "running dream" - so why wouldn't I keep it?
  • Running with the Night - Lionel Richie. Stay. Sense the theme here?
  • Sexyback - Justin Timberlake. Stay. It's the beat. The swagger. I can walk on this one and sashay my hips and get a little extra oomph in the walk (that is, if no one is with me). And I can shadowbox to it as I walk, for some arm action. Yeah. It stays.
  • Shining Star - Earth Wind & Fire. Stay. Same as "Ooh Child" -- it's not the beat, it's the message.
  • Sir Duke - Stevie Wonder. Gone. Love the song, but it's time for a rest.
  • Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves - Annie Lennox & Aretha Franklin. Stay. Good beat. I like the message too. Oh, don't act so surprised.... hello? Anyway.
  • Smoking Gun - Robert Cray. Gone. I love this song (this whole CD), but it isn't working with the overall picture here.
  • Some Like It Hot - Power Station. Stay. The beat. Period. And remembering how smokin' HOT Robert Palmer was in the mid-to-late 80s. That man did more for suits than anyone... yow.
  • Stone in Love - Journey. Stay. Good song, good beat, and I like it because it's not B2AC on the radio. Shout hallelujah for that reason alone.
  • Stuck in the Middle with You - Stealers' Wheel. Gone. Another good song that just isn't working here.
  • Suicide Blonde - INXS. Stay. Beat. Beat. Beat. And another smokin' hot singer.... Michael Hutchence and Robert Palmer left us too young. Dang.
  • The Boys Are Back In Town - Thin Lizzy. Gone. I enjoy it but just a little too B2AC for me.
  • The House Is Rockin' - Stevie Ray Vaughn. Stay. Good beat, just about the right length of song...... yeah.
  • Vehicle - The Ides of March (here due to another tagging error). Undecided. I had been thinking of taking this one off, but it worked in tonight's bike workout. So it may just stay.
  • The One Thing - INXS. Stay. Haven't we talked about them already? :D
  • The Other Side - Aerosmith. Undecided. I had thought about taking this one off too because I'm quasi-tired of it. But it worked well during my last walk and tonight's bike-out. So... it may stay? I may substitute another Aerosmith song instead, though. Just gotta mull it over.
  • There's Only One Way to Rock - Sammy Hagar. Stay. It's a good beat..... driving and just fast enough to make me work harder.
  • Tom Sawyer - Rush. Gone. Oh I love this song, but not here.
  • Tuckered Out - Clint Black. Gone. I thought it might work because it's got a fast tempo, but it's just .... not right. Not right for what I need. Oh well.
  • Under Pressure - Bowie/Queen. Stay. Love the message. Love the tempo. It works whether I'm walking, biking, even (gasp) maybe running. It stays.
  • Vacation - The Go-Go's. Stay. It's working for now. The other possible GG songs that I might switch this with would be "Turn To You" or "Head Over Heels" from '84. NOT "We Got The Beat" (total B2AC for me).
  • Vogue - Madonna. Stay. It's working for now.
  • Well All Right - Blind Faith. Stay. Love it, and it's working. A little slower-tempoed, but usually in a place when I need to bring it back down for some interval work. So it's staying.
  • Werewolves of London - Warren Zevon. Stay. It does nothing for me workout-wise, but I love this too much to let it go.....
  • What You Need - INXS. Undecided. This is the one INXS song I could take off and it wouldn't bother me.
  • Whatcha Gonna Do - Pablo Cruise. Gone. It's a great song but it's not working for me.
  • Whatever Gets You Through The Night - John Lennon/Elton John. Stay. Good tempo, and something about it that makes me smile. I can't explain it. But it's staying.
  • Who Will You Run To - Heart. Gone. I like the song just fine, it's just not working well here.
  • Winning - Santana. Stay. Always a stay. Another good message song and the beat is just enough to keep me going .... it stays.
And there you have it. I plan to spend the weekend adding a few new ones (probably a couple from The Gloved One or switching up a few others). I'll post a new list soon.

I might have my own "counter review" - just as you and Stoney both do (to my amusement) with my periodic AT40 review posts. (And why am I not surprised that "Winning" didn't get voted off the island? [g])

I realized early on with my walking regimen (and the abortive Y experiment a year earlier) that I cannot listen to music as I do so. I listen to old time radio instead, usually drama programs. I get lost in my theater of the mind, and it allows me to put my walking on auto-pilot ... indeed, I forget I'm walking. Best of all, the 30-minute format of radio drama allows me to time my walks. If I'm doing a 30' walk, the middle commercial break is my cue to start back toward the house.

I think it's because I have a high "burn-in" tendency regarding music - i.e. a memory or activity done while listening will color a song or artist for me. A good example: Norah Jones. Two years ago we were listening to her albums while in West Virginia ... ditto for last year ... and today, I hear her voice, and I have an urge to point the car toward Summersville.

Yet with OTR, even with the same program, it's a different episode each time.

If that makes any sense....

Okay, here's my take......

(Every Time I Turn Around) Back in Love Again - LTD
Nothing bad to say about it. Nothing. Brass talks and takes names.

Sex Machine - James Brown
James grunts and takes names, ranks and serial numbers.

A Man I'll Never Be - Boston Although I don't see this one as WF, but my mileage varies differently of courswe

Ah! Leah! - Donnie Iris
Doubly fantastic for a completely different reason. And I ass/u/me you'll be making a Fredericksburg road trip in Miz Pearl in the near future?

Ain't Wasting Time No More - Allman Brothers Band
Marginally in B2AC territory -- used to love it, but then came that blasted "classic rock" format....

Alive & Kicking - Simple Minds
As '80s as they come. A SWB (Song With Baggage®) ... although more like a small carry-on bag. Memories of "Ruth" and her sanctimonious ways (see follow-up SM single, "Sanctify Yourself").

All Fired Up - Pat Benatar
LI4M (Like It For Me® ... never did much for moi. I tend to gravitate toward the earlier output of Little Miss 'A Funny Thing Happened On My Way To Singing Opera.'

Are You Experienced - Jimi Hendrix
B2AC. Or, in the words of Skynyrd, "Oooooh, that smell...."

Are You Ready - Pacific Gas & Electric
Looooove it. That, I do.

Baker Street - Gerry Rafferty
Should be B2AC, but it remains a favorite of mine. Yeah, certainly not a WF record.

Bitch - Rolling Stones
Describes the state of classic rock radio. Another helping of the burnt bacon, please.

Boogie Wonderland - Earth Wind & Fire
Proof that not everything about 1979 in music was toilet-worthy. One of my favorites from that year.

Boogie Woogie Choo Choo Train - The Tractors
L. I. 4. M. Cringeworthy baggage from a period of time I'd just as soon nuke.

Born to Run - Bruce Springsteen
A "Slim Jim" in the B2AC hall of fame.

Brand New Lover - Dead or Alive
The techno '80s lives.

Cigarettes & Alcohol - Rod Stewart
#1 with a bullet in Utah. Ahem.

Cool the Engines - Boston
Best song from Third Stage.

Cradle of Love - Billy Idol
I hear the hook, and my mind morphs it into Weird Al's accordion groove. Sweet baggage, though. Memories of how good those first toots of the brown acid felt.

Dancing Days - Led Zeppelin
The bottom half of the meat is burnt. But then there's the top half. I'll eat that. Fewer points that way. :-)

Dancing in the Moonlight - King Harvest
If King Harvest is playing, I'll dance the night away.

Dazz - Brick
What part of "Awesome 70s soul" does anyone not understand?

Deeper & Deeper - The Fixx
Probably my favorite Fixx track. Takes me back to 1984 and the beginning of my first LUV.

Dixie Chicken - Little Feat
I've never been a Little Feat fan ... dunno why. I can take or leave this.

War - Edwin Starr
It's good for absolutely nothing especially when it's started for fraudulent reasons.

Eruption/You Really Got Me - Van Halen
"Interstate Driving Songs" ... that's a list waiting to happen. And we'll call the anthology Prelude to a Nasty Speeding Ticket.

Every Little Thing - Carlene Carter
Not sure I'm familar with it.

Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic - The Police
Key word: "Magic." But I agree that sometimes such pieces of magic need to be shelved so as not to lose their luster. (Ahhhh, memories of when I was Trey's age)

Everybody Dance - Ta Mara & the Seen
I myself prefer the song with the same title from Chic back in 1978.

Far Cry - Rush
Meh.

Move Over - Janis Joplin
Did she ever. :-/

Gemini Dream - Moody Blues
I have my own big-time memories about "Gemini." Ditto for "The Voice." Heck, even the third single release, "Talking Out of Turn."

To be continued...

Part 2 of 3:

Go Faster - Black Crowes
Yessir.

Hair of the Dog - Nazareth
Yeah, the Geico commercial pretty much destroyed it. B2AC, even though a lot of stations didn't go near it, for reasons I just cannot figure out. ;-)

Hearts on Fire - Randy Meisner
As much as "lost hit" as they come. Love it.

Home and Dry - Gerry Rafferty
Nothing Rafferty did could be qualified as WF, imho. Doesn't mean its listenability factor suffered ... H&D was one I loved back in the day. Still do.

Humans Being - Van Halen
From the album That Shark We Jumped Was A Long Time Ago, released on Puppet Show records.

I Feel Free - Cream
I Want to Break Free - Queen
I remember playing these on TOTR the day after I was offered my job and ticket out of Troy. In fact, if I recall, I played ‘em back to back.

I Want You Back - Jackson 5
A sad reminder of the downhill slalom his life was since Thriller.

I've Got A Rock & Roll Heart - Eric Clapton
Obviously you no longer get off on this song in your workouts. :-)

Invisible - Alison Moyet
Great, unburnt slab of vinyl from 1985.

It's In the Way That You Use It - Eric Clapton
As far as EC goes, I rate it a big "meh."

Jailbreak - Thin Lizzy
I cannot hear it without smiling one mean smug grin. And I think you know why, heh heh......

James Dean - The Eagles
File under: "Shoulda been a big smash."

Jealousy - Black Crowes
Taken from the CD The Southern Harmony and Workout Companion.

Jive Talkin' - Bee Gees
The ‘70s did not age all that well. Case in point.

Journey to the Center of the Mind - Amboy Dukes
Add to the "interstate road songs" list. Please.

Keep Yourself Alive - Queen
LI4M. Far from my favorite of their tracks. In fact, it's toward the bottom.

Leave It - Yes
Their best ‘80s song, bar n-o-n-e.

Let Me Love You Tonight - Pure Prairie League
Hardly one I'd expect to find on a workout playlist. Again, hardly a dealbreaker for enjoyment.

Life Is A Rock (But the Radio Rolled Me) - Reunion
Play it backwards, and you hear Jack Benny's Lucky Strike auctioneer.

Lights Out - Peter Wolf
The first five seconds of this record are all it takes. With warp speed I am catapulted back to Twin Towers #810 at A-State, August 1984, the beginning of my ‘away-at-college' days,

Love Will Find A Way - Pablo Cruise
It always does. And so does this record, when it comes to getting under your skin and staying there like a sweet salve to an otherwise disco wasteland.

Lovefool - The Cardigans
LI4M. Mid ‘90s brown acid. Make it stop.

Midnight at the Oasis - Maria Muldaur
Why do the camels have to go to sleep while Maria & lover have a 12:01 a.m. delight? Since when does kicking up a little dust behind a sand dune have bad effects on any witnessing humpbacks?

Misty Mountain Hop - Led Zeppelin
It's got a great beat and you can dance to it. So why wasn't it a hit single?

Need You Tonight - INXS
Brings back the last days of college and the uncertainty of what was to follow (plus, there were those dark storm clouds in the distance).

Never Been Any Reason - Head East
Midwest rawk came no better. No, wait ... yes, it did: "Love Me Tonight" is even better. (Now where is the syrup for my flapjacks??)

New York Groove - Ace Frehley
Classic Disco Rock. Yes, you COULD drive a camaro while wearing a half-open satin shirt.

No More Mr. Nice Guy - Alice Cooper
But do nice guys bleed, too?

Oh Yeah - Yello
Drop this one, and Mr. Ed Rooney will give you a week's detention. "Under (his) close personal supervision."

On and On - Stephen Bishop
True, you don't want to tire of it. Give it a rest, so it too may have a rest.

Ooh Child - The Five Stairsteps
You'd burn in hell if you removed this ‘un.

Okay, make that Part 3 of *4* ... damned character limits ....

Over the Hills and Far Away - Led Zeppelin
I only heard this single edit recently. While OTHAFA didn't chart that high (it didn't come near the top 40), it was heavily played on the big top-40s in Alabama.

Party - Boston
Every Boston song is a party.

Peace Frog - The Doors (without "Blue Sunday")
Typically played together, but talk about a train-wreck segue (or would that be a "Boogie Woogie Choo-Choo Train Wreck"?).

Play Something Sweet (Brickyard Blues) - Three Dog Night
One of the better records from latter-day 3DN.

Pop Life (Fresh Dance Mix) - Prince
I think the album version is the same as the single.

Pump Up The Volume - M/A/R/R/S
I should hate this song. I don't. In fact, I love it.

Radioactive - The Firm
Some good memories of 1985.

Ray of Light - Madonna
Meh.

Real Wild Child - Iggy Pop
For my money I'll take his "Gimme Danger."

Redneck Friend - Jackson Browne
"Maw, strap the record player to the side of the truck right beside the mattress."

Remedy - Black Crowes
Remedy? I don't want one when I'm listening to BCs.

Renegade - Styx
"Oh mama I'm in fear for my ears, from the long arm of the classic rock station."

Rock & Roll - Led Zeppelin
B2AC ... with, or without, an Escalade.

Rock & Roll Is King - ELO
...and don't you forget it, buddy.

Rock Star - Nickelback
*shudder* LI4M.

Rock the Casbah - The Clash
When a record is an integral part of ones' senior year, as this one was, it takes a little longer for the bacon to reach scorchedness.

Rock You Like A Hurricane - The Scorpions
1984 was such a sweet year for music, yes?

Rocky Mountain Way - Joe Walsh
More burnt bacon?

Romeo's Tune - Steve Forbert
Southern kisses are the best kisses.

Runner - Manfred Mann's Earth Band
What a lost piece of magic from 1984! It's a favorite from that period, bringing back everything that year was for me, both good and bad.

Running on Empty - Jackson Browne
B2AC. Now call AAA, ‘cuz that needle is way past "E."

Running with the Night - Lionel Richie
Like it, despite it regurgitating the melancholy of my life circa late 1983/early 1984.

Sexyback - Justin Timberlake
Air sickness bags are on the chairbacks in front of you. LI4M.

Shining Star - Earth Wind & Fire
This might be top of my list of EWF favorites.

Sir Duke - Stevie Wonder
Whether or not you pick up that burning smell, its magic and significance cannot be denied.

Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves - Annie Lennox & Aretha Franklin
Meh.

Smoking Gun - Robert Cray
Key word: "Smoking."

Some Like It Hot - Power Station
Meh, with occasional gusts to LI4M.

Stone in Love - Journey
Second best track off Escape. Favorite song, of course, was "Still They Ride."

Stuck in the Middle with You - Stealers' Wheel
There are worse places to be, I can assure you.

Suicide Blonde - INXS
Take it or leave it. Yeah YEAH yeah.

The Boys Are Back In Town - Thin Lizzy
Do you want a Diet Mountain Dew to go with those Slim Jims? How about a pack of Parliament Lights?

The House Is Rockin' - Stevie Ray Vaughn
From his album Stating the Obvious. A great one from the TOTR hall of fame.

And FINALLY:

Vehicle - The Ides of March
From their LP Show Us Your C&D Letter, David Clayton Thomas!.

The One Thing - INXS
The video, above all else. The song? Great on its own.

The Other Side - Aerosmith
I did visit the other side. And a judge's signature freed me in 1997.

There's Only One Way to Rock - Sammy Hagar
Speak for yourself, Sambo.

Tom Sawyer - Rush
Top-down, crank-it-up Friday night cruisin' music came no better in 1981.

Tuckered Out - Clint Black.
LI4M. Please.

Under Pressure - Bowie/Queen
I'll spare you the cringeworthy comparisons to a certain Van Winkle dude.

Vacation - The Go-Go's
I cannot hear it without thinking about Michael Moore and Fahrenheit 9/11.

Vogue - Madonna
From whatever "look" she was doing that given week. It's not too bad as far as Madonna records go, have to say.

Well All Right - Blind Faith
Buddy Holly taken to a new level. And Santana's cover from 1977 isn't too shabby.

Werewolves of London - Warren Zevon
B2AC. But an interesting mix with "Sweet Home Alabama", whoever did that recently.

What You Need - INXS
Irresistible. Nothing more need be said.

Whatcha Gonna Do - Pablo Cruise
I'm going to listen to some more Pablo. What ‘bout ‘choo?

Whatever Gets You Through The Night - John Lennon/Elton John
From the album Yoko Took Me Back. Gee, Thanks Reginald!

Who Will You Run To - Heart
SWB. Remind me tell you the story.

Winning - Santana
I got to the end of this list. Does that mean I win?

At the risk of sounding like a Spanish soccer announcer,

GOOOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!! It took 3 years and 3 weeks, but I am finally 44% of the woman I was on May 11, 2006. When I started the journey, this day was not even in sight. All I could honestly think about was how to take those first steps to get through the first day and the first week. I had no idea how I was supposed to do 5 minutes a day of activity, when it took all I could do to put one foot in front of the other. But if nothing else, once I make up my mind to do something.......... Here it is, June 4, 2009. I am 228 pounds lighter and a quadrillion times better. I made it through that first day, that first week just fine. I did the 5 minutes -- okay, really 10 minutes, all huffing and puffing and barely able to walk out two blocks and back. Then 20, then 30, and joined the Y, and ..... got the dog and had to walk him. Then said, "I can do a 5K." And then watched my race time improve each time I tried. In losing 228 pounds, I have gained so much. I wasn't e

Coming Around Again

Okay, accountability time again ....... As a lot of you know, in what feels like a lifetime ago, I lost a whole kindergarten class’s weight and did it fairly quickly (3 years). It was a struggle to maintain but I managed to “only” gain back about 40 of that original 230 I lost. Then foot surgery happened and I was just learning to walk pain-free (forget 5Ks). I put on a few more but still not a lot. When mama died, the bottom dropped out and I’ve been free-falling since. And the Quarantine 14 was part of that too. So it’s past time to get back on track. This time while it’s not just the physical side of things, it’s the mental side of it too. I’ll be honest: my anxiety has gotten worse since Richard died. There have been nights I have been too scared to sleep lying down because my head pipes up, “you know, what if you die lying down?” I’ve been pretty dang determined that if it’s in my power, my daddy will not have to bury both his kids from their own stupidity. So yeah. There ya go. M

It's almost here......

Not Christmas. Okay, yes, it is almost here, but that's not exactly what this is about. I went to weigh in today at the noon meeting, since our center will be closed after that meeting until Friday. I stepped on the scale, and I am four pounds down from last week. FOUR. Okay, big whoop, right? Well, yeah. I haven't had a four-pound loss in forever, so YES, it is a big deal. But this means I have ten pounds to go to hit goal. Ten. Ten. Ten. Ten. I have to let it sink in. I never in my wildest imagination pictured myself at this point when I started out. Seriously, when I started out, I had no idea where it would all lead, or if I would have the courage and determination to continue. The earliest successes led me to believe that yes, I could do this. But I had so much weight to lose that I really couldn't picture the final "Winning Outcome" (wink!). It was only by looking piece by piece, five pounds by five pounds (or ten by ten), that I could do it. Knowing that
